Simple mechanisms
WebbSimple Machines and the Rube Goldberg Challenge. Students research and learn about simple machines and other mechanisms through learning about a Rube Goldberg machine. Student teams design and build their own Rube Goldberg devices that incorporate at least six simple machines. This project is open-ended with much potential for creativity and fun. WebbOverview of Enduring Understandings: Structures and Mechanisms (K-8) Grade 1. Everyday structures. § Objects have observable characteristics and are made from materials. § Materials have specific properties. § An object is held together by its structure; its materials and structure determines its purpose.

WebbAntibiotic resistance mechanisms. 1. Stop the antibiotic from reaching its target: Pump the antibiotic out from the bacterial cell. Bacteria can produce pumps that sit in their membrane or cell wall. These so-called efflux pumps are very common in bacteria and can transport a variety of compounds such as signal molecules and nutrients. WebbA regular arrow (double-sided arrowhead) is used to indicate the movement of two electrons, while a line with a single-sided arrowhead (sometimes called a “fish hook arrow”) is used for single electron movement involved with radical reactions that are first described in …
A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage (also called leverage) to multiply force. Usually the term refers to the six classical simple machines that were defined by Renaissance scientists:
