The breathing fluid depicted in the film, oxygenated perfluorocarbon, actually exists, and while scenes with the diving suit were filmed with Ed Harris holding his breath, an earlier scene in which a rat is immersed in breathing fluid was filmed for real. WebI seem to remember a scene where they put a rat in the oxygenated (pink) water and show it breathing. Turns out it's real stuff but apparently the Royal Veterinary Society deemed it to be overly distressing for the rat so it's cut from UK broadcasts of the film but still shows up from time to time.
